Fujifilm FinePix F40fd

The Fujifilm FinePix F40fd includes ISO sensitivities as high as ISO 1600 equivalent (with ISO 2000 possible in two of the scene modes), courtesy of a sixth generation, eight megapixel Super CCD HR image sensor. Fuji's Super CCD HR sensors use an octagonal array of photodiodes that increase image resolution in the horizontal and vertical planes - where the maximum detail in pictures should be found. Fuji's Face Detection feature, first seen in the FinePix S6000fd, is achieved with a dedicated LSI chip in the F40 and can detect up to ten faces in the photo simultaneously. With the feature enabled, the camera indicates the faces detected in the scene by framing them with rectangles in the display - white for all but the top priority face, which is framed in green. The locations of faces are then used by the Fuji F40 to confirm the appropriate location for focus and exposure detection, so as to ensure that your subject is correctly focused even when off center. In Playback mode, the feature can be cleverly used to automatically zoom images to the primary face in an image (for confirmation of pose, focus, etc.), and can also be used to automatically crop a shot for optimum portrait framing. The face detection functionality can be disabled, as desired.

Fuji FinePix s5700/s700

The S5700 features a 10.0x Optical Zoom with a 35mm focal range equivalent of 38-380mm. Bring your subject closer and clearer with high quality Fujinon lens technology.

Fast moving subject? No problem. Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization technology utilizes the heightened sensitivity of the FinePix S5700 at ISO 1600 and high-speed shutter settings to prevent camera shake or freeze subject movement, keeping blur to a minimum. This easy to access feature (selectable on the mode dial) lets the FinePix S5700 choose the correct light sensitivity and best-matching shutter speed automatically, for the highest quality digital pictures.

Fujifilm FinePix F50fd

Review by Alex Burack

Fujifilm's FinePix F50fd is likely to come across vastly different to general consumers versus industry insiders. Those immersed in the industry might question the jump in resolution up to 12 megapixels, viewing the F50fd as essentially a digression for Fujifilm, while general shooters could look to the camera's massive resolution, upgraded face detection, dual image stabilization, 2.7-inch LCD screen, and expansive sensitivity range and think this camera's got it all. Ultimately, there's a bit of truth to both.

The Fujifilm F50fd arrives almost a year after the release of the F31fd. The face detection system offers some nice modifications, which include the addition of white balance and red eye correction, slide show and cropping functionality, and an increase in the number of detectable faces.

Fujifilm FinePix F60fd

The Fujifilm FinePix F60fd is based around a seventh generation 1/1.6" Super CCD HR image sensor with twelve megapixel resolution coupled to a Fujinon-branded 3x optical zoom lens that offers a range from a rather tight 35mm wide angle to a 105mm telephoto. The image sensor is mounted on a movable platter, allowing for sensor-shift type image stabilization. ISO sensitivity ranges up to a maximum of ISO 1,600 equivalent at full resolution (3,200 at a reduced five megapixel resolution, or 6,400 at three megapixels or below). The Fuji FinePix F60fd's rear panel offers no optical viewfinder, instead opting solely for a large 3.0" LCD display with 230,000 dots of resolution.

Following in the footsteps of the past F50fd model, the Fujifilm F60fd features face detection as its name might imply. The Fuji F60fd has a third-gen implementation of the feature capable of detecting up to ten faces in a scene in just 0.036 seconds. The angle at which the camera can detect a face has been further improved, with the company stating that the F60fd can now handle faces even at a 90° side profile, and even when the face is turned on its side or completely upside down. The face detection system is linked to both the autofocus and autoexposure systems, and to post-exposure red-eye removal.

Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro

The Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro is scheduled to ship in the first quarter of 2007, and the most obvious change for users of the company's past DSLR models is going to be the body. Fuji's S1 Pro was based on a Nikon N60 consumer film SLR, while the followup S2 Pro and S3 Pro models were Nikon N80-based. The S5 Pro takes a significant step forwards with a body that (although the company isn't officially stating derivations) is clearly based on Nikon's D200 digital SLR - and that brings with it a lot of benefits. Inside its all-metal body, the Fuji S5 Pro will now include 11-point AF, i-TTL flash metering, a 2.5" LCD display, Lithium Ion battery, a shutter with a rated lifetime of 100,000 cycles offering speeds from 30 to 1/8000 second, a slightly higher viewfinder magnification, 1/250 second flash sync, and lens aperture control of 1/3, 1/2 or 1 stop - all improvements over the predecessor camera.
